preparing your apartment for winter
As we get near to the beginning of winter each year, it is time to start preparing for the colder and wetter months ahead. There are several things you can and should do to prepare your apartment for the winter weather changes:
1. Clear your balcony drains
Drains can become clogged by leaves, hair, and other debris over time. It is important to regularly clean out your drains (particularly over the winter months) to prevent them from becoming blocked and allowing water to pool or overflow on your balcony.
2. Ventilate your apartment
Avoid mould from forming by making the ventilation of your apartment a priority (open windows as much as possible, particularly in the bathroom, and run your exhaust fan for 1 hour after you shower). Carefully inspect all areas regularly and stop mould before it spreads. Please also refer to our “Condensation & Mould” Information Guide for further information.
3. Secure items on balconies or bring them inside
Bring inside any items that may get damaged or blown away by the rain and wind, and ensure furniture and other items are secured when strong wind and storms are forecasted. If you’re living above ground floor, be aware that wind conditions will be stronger the higher up the building you are and have the potential to uplift items from your balcony and blow them over the edge, which can create a serious hazard.
4. Check your windows
Inspect your windows to make sure there are no obvious leaks coming through and make sure they can be closed properly. Be mindful of open windows during wet weather and close them when required to prevent rain from entering your apartment. If you do observe a window leak, please report it to our office.
5. Avoid unwanted bugs
The cooler weather means bugs, rodents and other pests are looking for a warm place to hide. An easy way to attract unwanted pests is by providing them with a food source, so be sure to take preventative steps such as cleaning your apartment regularly, storing your food items inside air-tight containers and taking your rubbish out as soon as possible.
